Woven fibres of a different kind, instead of cotton and a sewing machine, the fibres used here are from different plants...the Australian picabeen palm and the ordinary garden variety of banana and the machine swapped for hands...

Wonderful organic use of fibres, the weaving is a great way to coordinate hands, mind, imagination, sprit...

Now just to put on the finishing touches...

I just *love* the way this little dress came up. Fabulous colours and pattern.

On one of my browsing sessions for fabrics, I saw this pillowcase in a seconds shop and it grabbed my eye and imaginiation. So, I took it home popped it in the wash, dried it off. Then whipped up this little cute girl's dress. Upcycled fun.

But I do *love* having my little, furry friend, obvioulsy so happy in his basket, keep me company whilst I create a little 'sewn-up' piece of self-expression, a little outfit for a client or create something with special meaning for someone.

This is a one of our certified organic fabric girl's dresses, in our Eco Organic range, don't you just *love* the fabric! No chemicals have been used in the production or manufacture of the fabric, so a good choice for your health and the environment!

We have adjusted this stock dress for one of our valued clients, for a child that is taller then 'average' height.

The picture shows us adding a red complimentary border to increase the length of the dress!

Do you find it hard to get clothes to 'fit' your little ones, who may be smaller, taller etc than the 'average'. Email us to chat about what we can do to help get the right fit for your needs : )

The trigger can come from the most unexpected places, like the beautiful dancer above....

I was so moved by the image I just had to create and express my own interpretation, through clothing of course!

What fun, and a sense of satisfaction, fulfillment... A gorgeously long skirt...in a colour and soft fabric that I am *loving*...

Wearable 80's art, Ken Done vintage

Do you remember Ken Done, the Aussie art icon? Well, I have had this wonderful piece of upcycled Ken Done fabric for some time, and I have recently finished piecing together this fabulous, fun, skirt.

Overlock the waistband on, switch to3 threads, 1 needle and make a creative hem...

Voila one cute skirt! Doesn't this Ken Done fabric come up a treat.

What a unique collector's item and an interesting way to collect art. I would think it rare to come across a piece of this fabric again. It, to me, seems to have stood the test of time (my guess is 80's vintage - which just happens to be back in vogue) and has a fun quirky-ily groovy style. Isn' that part of the fun of upcycling!

Oooh, do I sell it or keep it?
It is said "if you were around to wear the fashion the first time, you probably shouldn't wear it the second time"...however I think there may be an exception, if it has been re-fashioned to a suitable style, one may be able to get away with it. What do you think?

I really enjoyed making this little beauty. I was itching to try my hand at making one of these and don't you just love the net (ok its a kinda love hate thing really) after searching I found a great little tute over at Froo*Gal and Twirling Betty. Both just great.

I made a few adjustments that I will share, and put in my own tute sometime soon(ish)

I can feel more are on the way!

Time for a cool change, How to wear a summer skirt in Autumn and Winter

It's now Autumn, and cooler weather is on it's way (southern hemisphere!).

Those familiar with the Lillipilli Lane handmade women's skirts will know I recommend they may also be teamed with leggings and boots in winter, as do others.

After doing some research for this article, I came across a great article of a lady who has done just that, but with a summer dress. Called "My Paper Doll: Winterizing The Summer Dress" the article by 'My Style Pill' (a NY stylist) explains so well how to 'winter-ise' a summer dress. (If this link doesn't take you to that article do a search in her blog for paper doll - it's an enjoyable read and her look is so much more chic !)

So here's my tips on how to adapt that summer skirt for winter-

1. Start with a Summer Skirt
Use any summer skirt already in your wardrobe.
I have used this fave of mine just for example ( its a handmade clothing at Lillipilli Lane skirt) Got to love your own creations : )

2. Add a long-sleeved T or skivvy
Choose black for winter. I love this tight fitting, flattering skivvy OR choose a long sleeve T if your climate doesn't get too cold. You may also coordinate with same colours in your skirt, such as the green or red.

3. Now Accessorise!
Add one of this season's beautiful scarves and there are sooo many gorgeous ones to choose from. Doesn't everyone need at least dozen! I have chosen a bright red to coordinate with the red pattern in the skirt.
This is one of my favourites, yes it's a handmade clothing at Lillipilli Lane scarf.

You could also choose a green.

4. Add a jacket
I have used an old fave, a well-worn navy cord jacket.

5. Add long black boots

Personally I love these Dr Martens mid length boots. For a more feminine, chic look pop over to My Style Pill .

5. Now to finish
To give your look that something special and add your own individual style add a pair of over-sized black sunnies. For tips on how to choose the right pair of sunnies pop over here.

6. Voila... What I like about this is you are adpating pieces you already have in your wardrobe.
You may need to buy an accessory or two but you are building on some main pieces you likely already have.

Lets see how you have adapted your summer skirt! Give it a go and pop back and leave a post, would love to see. Have fun and let your creativity fly.

The only problem you may occassioanlly have, depending on the fabric, is the skirt may be a bit clingy over tights, stockings. Has anyone overcome this?

I just *love* a road trip...An early am start and off we go, on a 2200km round trip across two states. Seeing some wonderful sights, travelling through our magnificant country, chatting with folks we meet along the way and finally reaching our destination, our loved ones to visit. From our little country abode to thebig smoke!

My Creative Space Today, a new season

My creative space has seen me playing with some gorgeous neutrals and lovely textures to create some new autumn girl's dresses. I have been playing with lots of different 'sleeves'- puffed sleeves, Juliette sleeves, sleeves with cuffs and without, to come up with some complementary sleeves for my winter dresses...
Just love the 'warmth' of this little dress...What do you think? In store soon...

I have also been happy to be following through on my desire to paint - colours shapes and words I just have to get them down on paper or canvas! A kind of colour / art therapy, self directed :) Just loving turquoise and pink at present...

Lovely scarves

I wore one of my favourites out yesterday evening, weather was cool but not cool enough for a cardigan, so draped the scarf around my neck and 'voila', just enough to take the chill off :)

So here we are, with a bang in 2011.

Gee what a start to the year! Being a Qld'er it has been full of some pretty scarey weather activity. Sooo glad all that water has moved of this island continent of ours...The sun is shining and the days are glorious once again. My heart goes out to all those affected and indirectly afftected by the flood events. Wishing you all the best.

After a couple of months holidays from Lillipilli Lane it nice to revisit and touch base with you once again. Where will this year take LL...More womens clothes, more painting and creativity...

My darling girl now at school! Gee I do miss her and yet also sooo proud of her. What does a mum/mom do with all this 'time/space' on her hands....any one else sending your littlies to school for the first time and now finding yourself at home with all this 'quietness'... So the world turns and things continue to grow.. to move... and to change...No doubt a year of many changes...

My Creative Space Today, pink!

My creative space recently has seen me produce some fun little girl's clothes! I love the very funky, mod retro organic cotton, fabric in the top two. Such a fun and beautiful fabric to work with! It is made to international standards without the use of chemicals. These little dresses are great for Christmas as well as regular summer wear.

The full circle skirt is made from a fun pink broderie anglaise, 100% cotton. Twirl!

The bottom little shoestring dresses are fun and modern fabrics in 100% cotton, giving a nice crisp feel and good to wear in summer in warmer climates.

That's my little show and tell for this week, hope you enjoyed viewing! They have provided me with joy to make and the recipients to wear! (These little goodies were custom made).

Christmas time. Yes it really is that time of year again!

This weekend is the time to put up our lovely Chrristmas tree, we have been putting of the request for a few weeks, but now many of the shops have their lovely trees and decorations up, ours should be too is the rationale of the littlies! Gee this year has come around quickly and am looking very much forward to the beauty and joy the Christmas season brings:)

Junk Love Wednesday, vintage aprons

Hello everyone,

missed last week's junk love post, a few family details to deal with!

Today my show and tell for Junk Love continues in the theme of vintage aprons and today's is a super-cute red and white cotton gingham, don't you just *love* that ric rac!
I just love these aprons and they hold fond memeories from my childhood. My mum wearing them as she baked home-cooked country style meals in a wood fired stove, with us kids warming our little hands by the warmth of the open door. When I got to an age when I was allowed to 'help' in the kitchen, I also popped one of these big grown up aprons on - albeit it was quite long!

Today I still enjoy wearing my own little collection of aprons, and so does my littly, its part of 'dressing up' for kicthen play:) What's your story to share today? Love to read about it.

Hello to all,
I have a *love* of vintage and old-school aprons. I grew up with these, wearing them with my mum as I helped in the kitchen as a littly. I have distinct memories of my mum wearing them:) and have a soft spot for them, collecting and putting them to use through the years. I even inherited some of mums! Now my little one and I do the same thing, we 'dress up' when we cook and put on our special aprons, its lots of fun!

My creative space, having fun!

A warm hello to everyone, nice to play "My Creative Space" again after being off-line for a while:)

What has been filling my creative corner recently?...Embellishments...I have taken some well invested time to spend on my creativity and the joy of using beautiful fabrics and playing with trims. Don't they just make an outfit!

I *love* custom making clothes for littlies and us grown ups too, to personalise a garment and make it in the colours and styles that bring joy to the individual. It's such a buzz when someone who isn't a 'sewer' joins with me to help 'create' their own garment! With me to guide of course :) I am enjoying the time and space afforded to me to create :) And just love the joy of sewing for my littly, its a way to add a special touch to every little day. (The above are a few of Lillipilli Lane's latest little goodies!)

I reckon special clothes are made for everyday! Whether it's to go feeding the ducks,help ing in the kitchen, a day at kindy, running in the park, or going on an special outing! After all what could be more special than 'childhood'?

What is my little creative corner of the world bringing to life today?

I have had the pleasure of creating this sweet skirt for a little two year old...and what a pleasure! Pink with white polka dots, 100% cotton:)

And I have to say at this point I just *love* my Janome machines - after using a very (very) old machine for many years - I am really appreciating these two hard working machines that to me seem 'mechanical pefection'. Any body else just love your machines? Would love to hear about it!

Junk Love, Wednesday

My find to share in this week's 'Junk Love' is this vintage frock made under the 'Julian Haye' label. I have seen this label around a bit on clothes from this era, however I haven't been able to find out too much about "Julian Haye' through 'googling'...any one know more? I am suspecting it is an Australian label?

I bought this little treasure at a great little 'junk' shop on a recent road trip, whereby 'I just had to stop!'
This lovely frock is 100% white cotton, with an embossed-like diamond pattern throughout, and a sweet floral/botanical, green and yellow print. It has a golden era elegance, is comfortable to wear and is one of my favourites! I am so looking forward to the coming spring/summer season to wear it (southern hemsiphere!)

Junk Love, Wednesday, Vintage Blue Rose

Hello and welcome to the middle of the week! Hope your has been good to you so far :)

What interesting little finds will we see today through Junk Love, Wednesday I wonder ?

My show and tell this week is a special little piece featuring the symbolic 'blue rose'.
It's a loved little piece due to the uniqueness the rose stands for and it's symbolism for love and prosperity and of course the fact thats its a lovely vintage piece. Albeit the blue rose does not exist within nature, the quest to create a blue rose has long been sought, but unsuccessful to date! The quest is likened to the search for the holy grail in the horticultural world :) (Ref: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_rose. Aug 2010)

The beautiful flowers (Azaleas) were picked and arranged by my littlest. Gotta love flowers :) So sweet !

What am I creating?...
After receiving a couple of lovely orders for my fabric rose and flower brooches I have been making a few more of these delightful little accessories. They are a joy to make and wear! Something quite unique and have such a handmade warmth to them! Well I guess we do put a little handmade love into all our little wares!

The colour matching (or not!) and finishes you can do are endless. It's also a great little activity to involve the kids in, great fine motor skills development!

These are two of several rustic little baskets I have found in a few shops here and there. They each have their own individuality and unique characteristics. I really enjoy using them to store my lace and trims! I love their weathered look, their textures and how they look sweet grouped together in my sewing room. And they are practical too!

My creative space recently has seen me doing something a little bit unusual...
I had lots of fun making up this wizard's cape for a kindy fundraiser : ) Made it with a bit of mystery but also to be fun so as not to be too scary!

All upcycled materials, except for the new ric rac! Everybody enjoyed wearing it, its swirls and swishes so nicely and is so colourful. We had a couple of requests from people who want one! Great fun!

My Creative Space today...So, I started...

The first step my first 'painting'...as a 'grown-up'... the concept from within - self expression...

The second step...how do I draw these things... Practising...shapes, colours, drawing...

The third step...paint on paper...colour (bright & beautiful) guided from within...fun

My painting partner tries acrylics for the first time... wow... 'The girl come's to life'...

Next...a spot of fresh flower arranging to inspire my stitching space...cream Camellia's...mmmm

A skirt to work together...on it's way to Hong Kong - exciting...fun...

Collaging with fabric flowers & fine motor skill development...whilst I stitch...

And time also for a spot of ballon art with my Jnr companion - filled with food colouring,

leave for a few days and enjoy the pattern that arrives...her idea...

Do you ever wonder where they get their great ideas?

Finally, a spot of cleaning...'Zen and the Art of Fireplace Maintenance'...

cleaning as meditation, time to practice quality in our tasks and to admire beauty - where you may not expect it...

My little piece to share with you this week is a lovely chair I found at a country second hand, collectables type store, you know the ones. Jam packed with heaps of interesting things. Browse for hours kind of place.

This lovely chair is a great addition to our dining table when we have extra guests, and is also a lovely piece in our wide hallway : ) I *love* the pretty back, that comfy seat, those legs and the upholstery! I look forward to recovering it when the time arises.

My creative space today...Betty Blue...

This week I have been playing with a little bit of Upcycling, I *love* it.

Yes, I do *Love* working with a pre-loved item which has had a whole life as something else to re-fashion it, breathing new life into it so to speak! Upcycling is such fun. Also known as re-purposing, I know many of you also enjoy working in this way...

This little beauty had her past life as a tablecloth, no longer serviceable she has re-began her life as a groovy little vintage inspired Mamma's skirt! I have called this one "Betty Blue"

My up-cycled pieces are made in the 'spirit of fun', and are made to be worn in the 'spirit of fun'. Another little bonus is the environmental one - these fun little pieces allow a more conscious consumer choice - to wear recycled wares, helping to reduce our 'carbon footprint' on the little part of the world where we live. From little things big things grow.

Thanks gals' for commenting upon my last post, you are all so inspiring, its a joy and learning to follow your links and suggestions...such creativity and wisdom :)

Something to share. I made this little piece for a birthday gift...I *love* being inspired by someone to make a skirt for, I then go looking for the colours/fabric that speak to me for this person, they come to me... The fact that the receiver is happy with them, and the colours/style/fit hits the spot is a really wonderful bonus...

being guided...listening...taking the time...caring....giving joy...sharing joy...and exchange...thanks

Hello all happy readers
today my creative space is about Moving Forward... and setting myself up to start some new creativity flows...

For such a long time now I have had an inner yearning to paint, with bright and colourful paints - onto canvas. I am also yearning to sculpt and do weaving with plant elements. Goodness me where to start???

After joining the sisterhood of mother's and talking with many mums I have noticed the desire/need to create and attraction to colour often shows itself after having a baby. Prior to baby it was lots of black, and white (in fact B&W photography was one of my all time loves) however post baby - the world of colour has flowered.

Through reading many, many handmade (and WAHMs) blogs I have observed the inspirations that many, many women attest to started or was 'kick-started'...after the birth process, or through being inspired by their children...Whilst our inspiration wells up from many places, it appears our inspiration may be strongly influenced by/after the birth process....I would *love* to read your thoughts and personal experience of this....I always enjoy a bit of philosophising ...

So, back to my first issue....Today, I would love to ask you - all you wonderful artists of blogs I have so much enjoyed reading/looking through over the last year -

"What is your 'Top Tip's' for someone like me, on the threshold of 'creative expression' who has never picked up a paint brush (other then the house-painitng variety!) to put to canvas before, how do I -well- actually get started?

What do I want to paint? Abstract I guess, what comes from within and where I am led...(and what do I do with all those used canvases???)

A spot of painting whilst the sun shines

Here are our finished front stairs! Finally, top coat of paint (Porters organic paint - http://www.porterspaints.com.au/ - colour malt) on the front stairs over the weekend, hubby started and I finished this morning! Has been on the to do list for quite some time, with lots of rain they have been in the undercoat for some time. Still quite a bit to do on the porch to cover the white undercoat with another gorgeous Porter's paint - 'Milk'...Motivation has been waning a bit after doing so much : ) Here's a quick look at the old stairs - these are the back stairs which are still to do, as is the back deck....A Qld'er is a big job to paint. But so worthwhile. Wish me luck...

Junk Love, Wednesday 'Health & Gingham'

Hello everyone, and thank you so much for visiting last Wednesday, nice to have you pop by.

I have been spending the last few months on me (!) thats an interesting concept for a mum isn't it : ) My health was really deteriorating and I have up-ed the anti to help get myself in better shape.

After 15 years as a vego, I have found it is the exact opposite of what the best foods are for me to eat : ( for my body, mind spirit to work their best...Gee thats a bit confronting! Any rate, I am eating a food diet better suited to my blood type you may have heard of it - 'Eat right for your type'. With the help of a good naturopath I am feeling soooo much better. It's been a long journey, and still further to go, yet I am feeling closer to my goal. I have learned so many things along the way and challenged so many myths about eating and various food regimes...thats the long story of why you haven't seem me too active on my beloved blog... Any rate back to the topic at hand : )

My show and tell for *Junk Love* this week is a un-serviceable piece of a pre-loved, yellow and white checked, gingham tablecloth, re-purposed as a sweet little girl's skirt. I just *love* this one.

The pockets are from little remnant patches of fabric I picked up at a local thrift shop. The button and ric rac are new items, however with a bit of treasure hunting you could also add recycled embellishments : ) Very easy to make and you can add the most wonderful array of colours together.

Junk Love, Wednesday 'Creel'

Happy Wednesday to you all!

My very much loved piece of 'junk' today is an old fishing 'creel'. I picked this little beauty up at a local flea market. I love the curve to it and the cane - the colour, the weathered texture and the weave. I love the idea that these were used to put fish in that were caught - these days its mostly plastic.

Can't you just picture it, a fisherman on the beach, his wader's on and creel slung over his back... salt spray in the air...

My hubby is a fisherman and he love's the sea and river, we love it when he bring's home a beautiful fresh fish. I really like the sustainability - locally caught and used by us.

This little creel is on our little front porch and is a great place to store shoes that we take off before coming inside - so instead of heaps of shoes piling up on the little porch - they go in to the creel. It is also a really great little seat for the littlies to sit on whilst we adults sit on the cane chairs. All in all I am pretty happy with my purchase - beautiful, more sustainable then a new product and practical!

My Creative Space today...Retro Reminiscing

You know how sometimes you just find a piece of fabric that inspires you. Well I found this little beauty and saw one of my skirts in it...I wanted to bring it to life...I *love* that feeling of inspiration/creativity that wells up inside: ) I know it's different for everyone, and not everyone will feel the same yet we can but follow our heart and hope to meet some folk who share it upon the way...(a bit poetic today ;))

I am going to have fun spinning a lil creation out of this retro style fabric...love these two big brown buttons to complete a bit of retro flavour...

Today's find is the cutest little pot holder. I do not know its history but I do know that I really like the scene on the fabric. The little girl with the ducks seems to tell a story - and takes you where your imagination may like to go. What a dreamy little scene : ) I like the oriental feel to it and the simple way of life emitted through the scene.

Hello to you today,
I have a wonderful piece of junk to share this morning. Found this little 60's cupboard on the side of the road - no really! A man was selling it out the front of his house - you know how people put things out on the footpath...I love that tradition I wonder if it's an Aussie thing or a global practice? Don't want it ? Pop it out on the footpath (verge). Some one will pick it up !

Any rate, love its groovy styling and the way the drawers slant into the middle - and look at those handles. Veneer finished. Love it! It has now replaced my entertainment unit (hence why there are lots of cords in the picture!) and there are lots of drawers to house all of those dvd's and bits and pieces!

My Creative Space, today...Painting, sewing reflecting...

Hello everyone! I missed yesterday's creative space which is a shame as I *love* to play this game. You know how you get a tad busy and can't quite squeeze everything in that you would like to? Hmmm....
Anyrate, so what has been occupying my creative space?

A bit of house-painting, with all the rain gone, its a chance to get back onto the tressels! On goes the undercoat to prep the surface (I *love* undercoat and Porters is so nice to use - what a base to work with), and then two lovely top-coats of 'Donkey Grey' for the walls, 'Milk' for the trims & 'Malt' for the window sills - all Porters Paints.

If you aren't familiar with these paints they are low VOC's (volatile organic compounds) & the most glorious range of colours, they have an amazing quality to them they 'bloom' have a peek at their website Porters Paints ...

I love the mix of our new colours so peaceful, calm and relaxing and goes so well with the purple tibouchina's and orange ixora's in the garden. A nice change from the orange/apricot heritage red and greens. What a lift!

Then its a bit of sewing for two wonderful women! A couple of pregnancy skirts, and some Mamma's skirts...(see our Online store for details www.madeit.com.au/LillipilliLane)... Lots of planning, shopping, designing to get it all to come together...Working on quite a few little projects at the moment an defining my juggling act ; ) & its all fun.

And of course, making that all important time to 'stop & smell the roses', one of my favourite sitting places to relax, reflect and enjoy - breathe :) Taking the time to enjoy these beautiful Autumn days. Spring & Autumn are my favourite seasons - I love the quality of the lighting during these times...

I found two of these very retro chairs (circa - perhaps 60's ?) in a local junk store, for my dining table. I really love their simple neat lines...A polish up and some new upholstery and they will look great - wish I had four more!!

My Creative Space, today...Calico dreams

Today as the morning sun comes streaming through my room, I am setting up to create a handmade 'flower girl's' skirt. I love this one - this is the second one I have made. I have a few morning chores to do first though!

This little frock is made from calico, with a fine light overlay, and a fabric flower to embellish...I hand-make a calico ruffle and really like the natural look and texture of the calico with the fineness of the little overlay, love the tea-stained look too : )

'Junk Love' Wednesday

I *love* this little retro stool. I picked it up at a local bric-a-brac dealer. The man said it has a special type of wicker that the seat has been woven from -can't recall the name.

It's a vintage piece circa 60's or 70's. It's a really handy little size for sitting at my sewing bench and sewing on buttons etc. Special little features - note the slight curve at the top of the legs and the sweet little covers on the feet. Nice details and great workmanship - have stood the test of time.

I have been wanting to share this beautiful little box with you, isn't it lovely. All carefully handmade. I love the colour and the trimming. It was a Mother's Day present, last year. Lucky me...(I guess its not that far off again )

So, what to do with such a special present? Aha, a wonderful place to keep all my sewing machine needles. Some place that I can use it and enjoy it's beauty regularly : )

Today we are working on a few proto-types for our new winter range - 'Warmies for Mamma's & Littlies' Lots of fun, here's a sneek preview ...

Recently completed - a lovely Women's Shawl Scarf and a very cuddly one for the littlies. I designed these last year, with the help of my littly, after finding it very hard to find kids scarves (kiddies need to be of the age where they can manage them safely - e.g. over three). Seems to be more of a range this year...
We road tested last year and loved them. (love to road test - isn't it a great way to get a feel for how 'wares' 'wear' and 'wear 'over time!)...So have just done them up yesterday and sold one already.

Ok thats my five minutes to blog - now off to create : ) An A-line skirt, and a swag of littlies skirts for a new online shop...coming soon...

hope you are having some of this lovely sunny Autumn weather - just gorgeous after lots and lots of rain.

I missed last weeks Junk Love Wednesday, a bit going on...happy to play again this week.

Today's treasure is a lovely dress given to me by a very kind friend to upcycle. They were part of her wedding wardrobe. Thank you Jenny. I am not sure what I shall do with it yet, but am enjoying the beauty and vintage/retro styling : ) Very wuthering heights...The red is a Gorgeous colour!

They fit me :) Perhaps I could do a hem adjustment , add a handmade rose and voila a new going out dress for me...Any ideas? Love to hear about it...Pop in and leave a comment.

Of Droughts & Flooding Rains & Market baskets!

Well here we are back on blog, sorry we've been absent this week - lots of wet weather, power outages etc. Just want to start by sending out 'well wishes' to all affected by the flooding rains, especially our friends on the land who may be dealing with flooded crops and ag etc and those who have been isolated for days and weeks on end. We wish you well.

Weather that heads towards to 'extreme' end of the spectrum oft reminds me of the poem 'My Country' by Dorothea Mackellar...

"I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,

Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains,

I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel sea,

Her beauty and her terror -

The wide brown land for me...

On another note, I wanted to share this beaut little handmade basket I purchased a little while ago for my market trips (Farmers markets - for lots of yummy organic and handmade produce). I love it - took me a while to find 'just what I was looking for' - the round shape is perfect for sticking lots and lots in - heavy produce on the bottom, soft fruits etc on top! Doesn't matter if it gets wet - its just improves the shape and the handle is great, carry over arm, or with one's hands!

I have been working on a toile for a new skirt, very excited ...
I made it out of calico first for the prototype, then was off down the hill to the pattern maker for some clarification...Looking forward to doing up the second run soon:)

What a find. This beautiful 1940's/50's circa (so I was told - don't hold me to it though : )) cupboard from our local Trading Post. I love the vintage/retro look to it.
I walked in store and saw this little beauty being unloaded from the back of the truck, really. It was just what I had been looking for, so I made the purchase. *Love* the marble top which I will get polished and I will also give the paint a new coat. It's now a useful little sideboard.

Monday morning

These chooks (hens) have the right idea, totally enjoying themselves basking in the glorious sunlight : )
(What are they doing? - laying down and spreading their wings out to let the warmness in to every little feather - I'd say totally relaxing!)

I *love* having hens as pets. The little routine of heading downstairs in the morning, opening the hen house and seeing them race past - one heading for the straw nest to lay her eggs, the other racing staright up to the seed bowl to enjoy her breakfast. Priorities...

Then they head off and cruise the garden scratching for insects, having dust baths, basking in the sun, chasing after moths (this really is very funny to watch - especially as they jump in the air to grab them)...

And we get beautiful golden eggs to boot....Go the humble hen.

Working with some, beautiful in their simplicity, vintage inspired very soft cotton fabrics. They are a joy to work with.

I have put together these two simply-styled Easy-wear skirts and am really pleased with them. From cut to finish is a couple of hours for each : ) I enjoy the creative process of watching them take form from a piece of flat fabric to a finished life-filled skirt:)

"Welcome to Junk Love Wednesday a little club started by Selina at Wild Things of Noosa where each week we post about our favourite second hand find or treasure" (ref: Em at emmaroseart).

This week, following on from my post last week about some lovely upcycled fabrics I was lucky enough to find, I would like to introduce you to this beautiful vintage dress that belonged to my Aunty. I was so very lucky to have it handed down to me. Oh and it is handmade too.

I have always been into Vintage and as a 'Bright Young Thing' I delighted in wearing it with my Doc Marten boots (love the 90's) and flowers in my hair, ready for a fun night out...I still love this dress.

2nd hand wares often have many stories attached to them, almost have a life of their own....imagine the stories they could tell if they could talk...

A Variation on a Theme

Just finished this hip little range of 'Upcycles' *love* these. They have built on the one I started as a 'proto-type' in our last post...Our Upcycles are meant to be an environmental choice as in 'Reduce, Reuse and Recycle' and a bit of *Fun*.

Also, some pretty little 'Vintage inspired' girl's skirts to bring joy to the wearer. They are an 'Easy-wear' pull on style; 'Easy-care' hardwearing 100% cotton - iron or don't iron - the crinkled 100% cotton look can look quite crisp and fun; and all 100% Handmade : )

These sweet little 'dancing skirts' are a real favourite with girls and the 'not too fussy' styles make them quite wearable and manageable for littlies. The simplistic style is in keeping with our 'Kids clothes for Kids' philosophy - nothing too fancy, no scaled down grown-ups clothes :) Simple old fashion style and quality with a modern edge.

These were a joy to make these and a Big Thanks to Mel at Mel's Garden for her order : ) Mel's lovely online store will open Feb 19th and we wish her a big congratulations and a great start to her trading. Lillipilli Lane is delighted to join Mini Mermaid in store.

handmade upcycled Mamma's skirt

Here it is,
my upcycled beauty (see previous post for raw materials) I just *love* the way this one turned out...I have called it 'Dynamic'. I love working with fabrics that inspire me (which I only use) and they almost guide themselves along, letting me know what to do with them.

This little skirt has just gone to a Mamma (to be again) to accommodate her growing shape, to provide some comfort, to be fun and jazzy - some pregnancy clothes are so boring aren't they...

It also will hope to see her through the period after birth with its gentle drawstring waist fitting loosely able to adjust, as her body adjusts through all the phases of motherhood xx *Love* making these.

Our 'To Do' list for today,

We are working on some new upcycled skirts. We love the philosophy and creativity of 'upcycling', it is one of our most favourite ways to make useful wares. So happy to find these beautiful little fabric remnants and this funky un-serviceable sheet (which has holes in places).

From these little Treasures we will create some Easy-wear Skirts
Looking forward to getting started! We use un-servicable materials for our upcycles - as we can't see the sustainability in cutting up wares that are in working order, even if they are a bit outdated ; )

One of these upcycled's will go to a Mamma who is yearning for something comfortable to wear during her weeks of pregnancy - one that will grow with her through pregnancy and beyond. Our Easy-wear skirts are totally made with Mamma's in mind. A comfy elastic waist that is easy to *pull-on* style, great for mamma's with littlies to manage, even with one hand! Don't we often just have one hand free - the other holding a baby or multi-tasking, what a blessing the baby sling is!

The other upcycled skirts will find a home a beautiful new home at a fabulous new online store, soon to open:) take a sneek preview, its gorgeous and has some really unique and creative wares Mels Garden 'Where all the products are handmade, organic, made local & sustainable'. We are very much looking forward to joining Mel's Garden.

Why is our label on the front?

Why do we break with convention and place our clothing label on the front of our clothing rather then hidden away inside?...The reason for this is simple, and in line with our design philosophy of 'Easy-wear clothes' and 'Kids clothes for kids'.

At a certain age (approx 2-4, some start as earlier) many children are very enthusiastic (many but not all!) to dress themselves. How many of us parents have heard "I can do it myself" during dressing time.

To help these aspiring littlies along the way we place our label, in big letters easy for them to see and in fun colours and always in the same place, as a marker for children to know which way to put the item on. Which way is the front and back, which side? How many of us have seen the wonderful little way they struggle and relentlessly persist to get clothing on and swivel it around to try and find the right way!

The little Lillipilli Lane label always goes to the front and to the bottom left, your left if you are wearing it :)

We aim to help you with this wonderful age/development milestone for your little ones.

Looking for bright and stylish boys wear?

These gorgeous little boys shorts are hot off the serger and on their way to Poppy Is our lovely stockist at the Gold Coast. The colours are fun, bright and stylish for those who are looking for something a little different to the usual primary colours, browns and blacks.

They are a short style with not-too-wide legs so they don't get caught on things as little boys are motoring around. Very suitable for boys learning to walk as they won’t get in the way of their movements like baggier styles may. This briefer style short is also good for hot summer days, being cooler than the baggy styles. They are available in sizes 2,3 and 4 and are made to have room for a nappy under, or not.

They also feature the Lillipilli Lane Easy -wear elastic waist that is easy for toddlers to manage (pulling up/down) and its really handy to have a few of these shorts on hand during toliet training times.

This style does not include pockets or embellishments as they are made to be age-appropriate for under three's and that means no choking objects.

Finished! 10 lovely little kindy sheets and library bag sets. 100% cotton. Really happy with them, they have a sweet hand-made quality, nicely suited to a kindy.

Each is unisex, made to appeal to boys or girls and yet in favourite colours for this age.

The ends of the cord are frayed to give a cute look and are embellished with a handmade star or birdy for a bit of fun and to personalise:) Crimping scissors are used for a fun finish and to help limit fraying.

Lots of work, and yet very rewarding:) and its nice to be able to help out the local community kindy. To give a little back.

An Australia Day long weekend...

Isn't it wonderful having a long weekend, especially with a cheeky Monday in there...A chance to do some sewing, 10 sets of kindy sheet sets ...20 sheets in all, thats a lot of seams - 80 to be precise and 40 elastic corners. Finished the pressing, during which I was dreaming of an Elna press...Any-one use one, are the good?

Have 3 complete sets done with little bags.

Thats 7 to go...Lucky I have a great helper (wearing her fave TillyToms outfit - thanks Anna:)). I was so impressed to see the foot pedal being used with the hands to wind on lots and lots of bobbins as 'it was easier'. Beautiful creative thinking, makes me smile.

Then its on to sewing up 12 wonderful skirts for an online store...Looking forward to working with some fabulous fabrics I have...especially some beautiful up-cycled's...such fun...

Then I am really looking forward to sewing some vibrant and fun little boys shorts, from some great fabrics, for a stylish new gift store on the Gold Coast, take a peek at Poppy Is which "carries a delightful range of handmade jewellery and gifts, beautiful greeting cards and stylish clothing" - Lillipilli Lane's stylish and comfortable mamma's easy-wear skirts have already found a home at Poppy Is' lovely store.

Still on the
To Do' list is making up the toiles from new skirt and dress patterns I have worked with a pattern maker on...Sounds busy doesn't it...And its just January...Its all good and am grateful for the joy Lillipilli Lane is bringing for me the creator and for those who are finding joy its its nature and style, thank you.

On this long weekend, I am also gaining a little balance through relaxing by the crepe myrtle which is particularly calming at present with its sprays of lavender flowers. Delightful.

Hello and a very Happy New Year to you all, may 2010 to be a great year : ) Hope you have enjoyed the festive season, whether it was sweating it out at the beach in Australia, or enjoying the snow in the northern hemisphere, we dream of white Christmas' here in Oz.

We have been busy over the break with beaching, lots of present opening, some R&R and continuing on the journey of house-painting. Its coming along great with lots of helping hands!

Guess what, I know many of you will relate to this - I have been sewing - yes actual sewing : ) and so I have been remiss in tending my beloved computer...

I have been inspired by Christmas and fellow bloggers beautiful snaps on what chrissy is like in their homes : )

We put up our wonderful tree a couple of weeks back, after requests from the youngest in the family since October.

I love the little details in putting it up, the special PINK additions to the tree by my littly - pink bows and pink bells. I also love the little HANDMADE treasures made by family and friends over the years that add a lovely warm touch. The tree symbolises joy, hope and reflection on the importance of kindness, happiness and giving with drama's aside for a while : )

May I take this chance to wish you and your's a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thanks so much to all for your support, friendship thru 2009. I really look forward to a wonderful new year in 2010 for Lillipilli Lane and for you all.

New mamma's skirts, love these

Hello everyone, hope all is well for each and everyone of you.

I came accross this fabric in a new store - I love the retro and vintage type fabrics and found these! Lucky me. The inspiration as to what to make from them came to me - yes fabrics talk to me :-) - so I put them together as a couple of very comfy long easy-wear skirts. I love these you can slip them on at home, or if you have to go out...very comfy and look ok too...

The patterns really are lovely - best to have a close up to really see their character. I am drawn to orange at present - signifies growth and creativity...and this particular shade of green I find happy and easy to be around. I am now looking forward to making myself a version...(yes I do have lots of fabric put aside to make my very own - can take a while, anybody else have that experience!)

Snowhite comes to visit

I have just made this cute little costume - Snowhite and am very happy with it. And best its all Up-cycled out of remnant fabrics - no new fabric needed! I made it from an adjusted pattern a lovely lady gave me of a funky 80's dress pattern - I knew that would come in handy... I had lots of fun making it, learnt a few things and most importantly it passed the test with the little princess wearing it, phew.

Here is my latest cute mamma's skirt. Its a full gathered skirt so is a bit twirly and fun. Lightweight, cool, pretty fabric. I have added a little gathered pocket and ric rac trim for fun and a nice big retro style button. Gathered at the waist for ease of fit. Can be worn at the waist as above, or at the hips as below.
